Rethymnon is built between the two other large cities of Crete. In the east is Heraklion about 80 km far and in the west is Chania about 65 km far. It is located between two very large and sandy beaches with crystal clear water.
On the west side is the beach of Episkopi, kavros and Georgioupolis (12 km) and on the east side is the beach of Stavromenos (10 km)
Across the new city of Rethymnon on the east is also a beactifull and sandy beach almost 3 km long which every summer is crowded of tourists. Across the road and above this beach you can also find every kind of restaurants, tavernas, supermarkets and car rental offices.
Access
Rethymnon hasn't got any airport so the city is served by the airports of Chania and Heraklion. The port of Rethymnon is too small and because of the low number of passengers is not able to keep a steamship line alive all year. So sometimes there is connection with Piraeus only in the summer months from June till the end of September. Public buses can be used for travelling to Chania or Heraklion as well as the most of the towns and villages that are located around the town.
Many car rental companies, including www.eurocars.gr also deliver and collect economy rental cars at the airports and ports of Chania and Heraklion all year.
History
Rethymnon city was built on the site of ancient Rithymna during Mycenean times. In the 3rd century AD. Rethymnon became a city during the Venetian occupation. The Venetians used the port of Rethymnon for their operations travelling from Heraklion to Chania so Rethymnon became the third bigger city in Crete.
Rethymnon was destroyed in 1567 when Algerians pirates conguered, robbed and burned it.
The Turks took over Rethymnon at 1646. During the Ottoman period Rethymnon fell into decline as all the other towns in Crete. The Russian army took Rethymnon and held it until 1909. In 1913, it became part of Greece together with the rest of Crete.
Sights
The Fortezza castle was built by the Venetians in 1590 to protect the city from the pirates and the turks. It is built at the top of a hill above the old town of Rethymnon and the Venetian harbour. Today hundrends of tourist visit it every year and many theaters take place there during the summer months.
The Venetian Loggia is an elegant building of the 16th century, that used to be a Venetian club.
Rimondi fountain with a rich decoration is situated at the platanos square, the centre of the Venetian town. It was built in 1626, by A. Rimondi, in order to provide the citizens with drinkable water.
The Venetian harbour for many years was used from the fishermen of Rethymnon and for commercial reazons now is full of fish tavernas and crowded every summer by tourists.
Car rental the beach road in the east side of Rethymnon has plenty of car rental companies that offer economy car hire and motorbike hire in very low and logic rates and high quality.
Rethymnon is general a very traditional small town that can offer unforgetable holidays for every one, offering plenty of activities and facilities, wonderfull and traditional apartments, holiday homes and big luxury hotels. Bars, clubs and cafe are open all night and everybody can enjoy and feel safe and comfortable with the local friendly people.
